Two Irish Wills Indexes - over 70,000 names - on Irish Origins
This month’s featured Irish Origins datasets After births, marriages, deaths, and census records, wills are the most important source documents for the family history researcher. Nearly all wills contain information about family relationships, places, and - often - rich social information: what people did; what they possessed, what they valued; what they felt about others.

Given that that the vast majority of original wills were destroyed in 1922, these indexes are an essential resource for research.

To our Irish Wills Index 1484-1858, which contains 100,000 names, we have now added two more indexes to Irish Wills, with a further 70,000 names:

  • Phillimore & Thrift, Indexes to Irish Wills 1536-1858
  • Sir Arthur Vicars, Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland 1536-1858

The 1798 Rebellion: Claimants and Surrenders on Irish Origins
The 1798 Rebellion was a watershed in Irish history. It has been estimated that up to 30,000 people were killed during the uprising, with many more wounded.

This dataset - The 1798 Rebellion: Claimants and Surrenders - brings together some of the few remaining primary sources about the people involved in this conflict.

It contains two lists of individuals, those who made claims for compensation for loss of property during the rising, and rebels who surrendered in Dublin City and Coolock Barony. These groups come from every social background, from poor Dublin city labourers and artisans to the aristocratic ascendancy of late eighteenth century Ireland. Over 8,000 names have been indexed.
